Gold testing solutions are available from 8ct to 24ct, alongside two silver tests, stainless steel and platinum solutions. Kontrasol Touchstone Care Solution is also available for cleaning and maintaining the test stone.

Gold Testing Solutions – How to Use

• Prepare the metal
  Carefully file or rasp an inconspicuous area of the item. This exposes the underlying metal and helps distinguish plating from solid gold.
  
• Make a test line
  Rub the filed area firmly against the touchstone to create a sharp, clearly visible line.
  
• Apply the testing solution
  Start with the lower-carat solution and work upwards as required:
  - 8ct solution affects metals below 8ct
  - 14ct solution affects metals below 14ct
  - 18ct solution affects metals below 18ct
  - Continue with the higher-carat solutions as required
  If the metal is affected, the solution will begin to react/foam, indicating that the metal composition is below the carat level stated on the testing solution.
  
• Optional comparison test
  For an additional check, make a second line using a testing star of known gold composition. Apply the same solution to both lines and compare the reactions.
  Testing star sold separately.
  
• Clean the touchstone
  Carefully clean the stone with water after testing, then apply Kontrasol Touchstone Care Solution with a cloth.
  

Silver Testing Solutions
Both silver solutions are based on standard 800 silver and are designed to determine whether silver is present.

• Silver CF – White Cap: Produces a white result. This formulation was developed with significantly fewer hazard characteristics according to the supplied CLP/CMR information.
  
• Traditional Silver Test – Black Cap: Produces a red result.
  Important: These solutions indicate the presence of silver but cannot determine the actual silver content or fineness.
  

Stainless Steel Testing Solution
Designed to help distinguish stainless steel, silver and white gold.
Apply the solution and allow approximately 1 minute before removing the drop:

• Whitening = Stainless Steel
  
• Darkening = Silver
  

Platinum Testing Solution
For traditional touchstone testing of platinum.
Rub the metal on the test stone and apply a drop of the platinum testing solution. When testing Platinum 999.5, the test line should remain visible after approximately 2–3 minutes according to the supplied testing method.

Kontrasol Touchstone Care Solution
Kontrasol is designed for cleaning and caring for the touchstone after testing. After carefully cleaning the stone with water, apply Kontrasol using a cloth.
Kontrasol is a touchstone care solution, not a metal testing acid.
